1892 Single Shaft Pond Forgeries
There are no widespread reports of forgery for this coin. However, it is known that some examples have been altered—converting Double Shaft coins into Single Shaft versions and vice versa. This confusion arose from an earlier misconception that the Double Shaft was the rarer variety.

The Journey of the 1892 Single Shaft Pond Through Auction History
The 1892 Single Shaft Pond is the rarer of the two varieties minted that year, making it one of the most desirable coins in South African numismatics. Unlike the more frequently encountered Double Shaft version, the Single Shaft coins were produced in smaller numbers, and high-grade examples are particularly scarce.
The journey began in January 2011, when an NGC AU55 specimen fetched $21,850, reflecting strong demand. Later that year in September, a lower-graded XF40 still managed a solid $5,175. In January 2012, a PCGS AU58 realized $14,000, and a NGC MS61 fetched an impressive $43,125, underscoring the coin’s prestige.
Throughout 2012 and 2013, the market remained active. A NGC XF45 brought in $4,406 in September 2012, and another XF45 sold for $4,700 in January 2013. A PCGS AU50 achieved $7,050 by September 2013.
The year 2014 highlighted both the variety and volatility of market interest. A NGC AU55 reached $8,225, while two lesser-grade pieces in XF40 and VF35 sold for $3,818 and $2,115 respectively. An AU50 traded at $4,993 in August.
Interest rose again in 2021, when a PCGS AU53 changed hands for $9,000. In 2022, an NGC AU53 sold for $4,800, followed by a surprising MS53 closing at only $3,120 in August.
By May 2024, the market saw a dip, with an NGC AU53 going for $1,560 and a PCGS AU53 at $2,760. However, the coin rebounded in January 2025, where an NGC MS61 reached $9,600, and an AU58 sold for $2,880.
These results affirm the 1892 Single Shaft Pond’s rarity and historical importance. Whether it achieves record-breaking figures or moderate results, its presence at auction continues to inspire collectors and historians alike.
