Kruger Pond Forgeries

There are many known forgeries of Kruger Pond coins. While most are easily identifiable, collectors should still exercise caution.

1894 and 1897 Pond Forgeries

Several copies exist for both the 1894 and 1897 Kruger Ponds. One of the most recognizable indicators of a forgery is a visible cut on President Kruger's nose that extends down to his lip.

Another distinguishing feature is a visible mark or cut through the letter “Z” in “Zuid Afrikaanse Republiek.” This is commonly referred to as the "Z variety" forgery. The same characteristic appears on some 1897 Pond counterfeits.
